Originally forming in Scotland in 1982, Primal Scream were key to the C86 indie scene in the UK. They were signed by Alan McGee to Elevation Records in 1987 for their debut album, Sonic Flower Groove. Featuring Bobby Gillespie on vocals Jim Beattie and Andrew Innes on guitar, and Robert Young on bass, the sound of their debut is very different to the dance orientated groove they pioneered in the 1990s.
Very much influenced by Nuggets, psychedelic pop and garage rock of 1960s America, the album was preceded by two singles of their Byrds-infused indie-pop; ‘Gentle Tuesday’, released June 1987, and ‘Imperial’, released September 1987. Featuring a number of non-album cuts, ‘I'm Gonna Make You Mine’ was originally released by The Shadows of Knight, and Pete Townsend’s ‘So Sad About Us’ was originally recorded by The Who

  • Record Store Day 2026 Edition - Released as a special RSD 2026 collector’s release
  • Early Primal Scream Era - Highlights the band’s 1987 C86 indie scene recordings
  • Includes Classic Singles - Features "Gentle Tuesday” and "Imperial”

  • Psychedelic And Garage Rock Influence - Inspired by 1960s American psychedelic pop and garage rock styles
