The Giant Armadillo is an armored animal that is covered with flexible scales. Aside from its scales, other notable features include its wide head that is also protected by scales, sturdy legs, powerful claws on their forefeet, and a pink band located around the lower part of its shell. Moreover, these animals are dark brown in color. Giant armadillos are agile creatures and have the ability to balance themselves with the use of their hind legs and tail. They typically inhabit the grasslands, woodlands, brushlands, and forests of Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Paraguay, Bolivia, French Guiana, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. With the use of their powerful claws, they can make burrows and live in there. Furthermore, they are nocturnal and omnivorous animals. They emerge at night to feed on termites, ants, spiders, insects, larvae, lizards, carrion, snakes, fruits, and plants. Giant armadillos make use of their third claw to tear into the nests of termites when feeding. When attacked by predators, they dig into the ground to defend itself because it cannot curl into a ball, unlike its smaller relatives.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Giant Armadillo is listed as Vulnerable. Some of the major threats to their population include overhunting and habitat loss due to agricultural development and other factors caused by humans. These armored mammals are hunted for their eat and because they can be sold in the illegal exotic pet trade.
