Moreover, they are nocturnal creatures, which spend their time in burrows, tree hollows, or underneath stones during the day. Just like other salamanders, fire salamanders are classified as carnivores and their diet mostly consists of insects, worms, spiders, and other small vertebrates. Those which are kept as pets are typically fed with mealworms and crickets. The breeding season of fire salamanders occurs from February to May, and the mating process occurs on land. A female salamander may produce about 70 eggs, and the larvae will be deposited into a water body. For about three months, they will live in the water by breathing through their external gills until they metamorphose and leave the water.
